How to Survive Your First Hours in Subnautica 2 — Beginner's Step-by-Step Guide
Survive your first hours in Subnautica 2 with this step-by-step beginner's guide. What to craft first, where to find the Digestion Angel Comb, and how to build your first base.
- •Craft Multitool first → Scanner second → find Digestion Angel Comb (NE, 160m)
- •Without Digestion, you can't eat alien food — you'll get sick and die
- •Build a real base ASAP. The Lifepod Fabricator has limited recipes

You Just Crashed on Proteus. Now What?
You crashed on an alien ocean planet. No food. No tools. No idea what's down there. Follow these steps, in this exact order, and you'll be running a self-sufficient underwater base within hours.
Craft the Multitool First, You Can't Do Anything Without It
Materials: 3× Titanium
Grab 3× Titanium from the seabed around your Lifepod. Craft this immediately, you can't harvest anything without it.
Craft the Scanner Second, It Unlocks Every Blueprint
Materials: 2× Titanium, 2× Quartz, 1× Basic Battery
Quartz: on the seabed and in caves. Basic Battery: 1× Copper + 1× Acidic Raion Pouch.
Why this matters: No scanner = no blueprints = no progress. Every tool, base part, and vehicle requires scanning first.
Find the Digestion Angel Comb (NE, 160m), Or You'll Starve
Head northeast from your Lifepod approximately 160 meters. Look for a glowing purple plant called an Angel Comb. Interact with it to unlock the Digestion adaptation.
Without Digestion, you cannot safely eat alien food. You'll get sick from eating local fish. This is the #1 mistake new players make, they starve because they don't know about this adaptation.
Bonus: While heading northeast, grab Water Slugs from the seabed. One Water Slug = one bottle of water in the Fabricator.
Equip Fins, Air Tank, and Air Bladder Before Exploring Deeper
Before exploring further, craft these:
| Item | Materials | Why You Need It | |------|-----------|----------------| | Basic Fins | 2× Rubber, 2× Fiber | Faster swimming speed. major change. | | Standard Air Tank | 2× Titanium, 1× Rubber, 2× Silver | Extends oxygen to 75. Non-negotiable. | | Air Bladder | 2× Titanium, 1× Rubber | Emergency oxygen + rapid ascent. Saves lives. |
Where to find Silver: The Blighted Area and Old Habitat region (20-60m depth, explore east/southeast of Lifepod).
Where to find Rubber: Lucifer Rotsac plants in the Shallows and Old Habitat area.
Activate the Welcome Center (SE, 100m) for Biomods
The Welcome Center is located southeast of your Lifepod, approximately 100 meters away. It's a large ruined structure.
- Enter the Welcome Center.
- Find the power outlet on the wall.
- Insert a Basic Battery.
- The Biolab inside activates, you can now research Biomods.
Recommended first Biomods:
- Active: Dash, short speed burst, great for escaping predators
- Passive: Sea Skimmer, faster movement near the water surface
Build a Real Base, The Lifepod Fabricator Is Limited
Scan 2 Habitat Builder fragments at the Welcome Center (and another at Camp One in Jelly Barrens, to the northeast). Once unlocked:
- Craft the Habitat Builder: 2× Titanium, 1× Glass, 1× Basic Battery, 1× Copper Wire.
- Find a flat area near resources (Shallows or Coral Fields).
- Build in this order: Room (5× Titanium), Hatch (1× Ti + 1× Quartz), Solar Panel, Fabricator (in-base).
Why build a base: The Lifepod Fabricator has limitations. A base Fabricator unlocks the full crafting tree. Plus, you get storage lockers, battery chargers, and actual room to organize.

Common Beginner Mistakes
- Not crafting a Scanner early. You can't unlock blueprints without scanning.
- Eating fish before getting Digestion. You'll get sick and lose health.
- Ignoring base building. You need a real base with storage and a Fabricator.
- Swimming too deep without air upgrades. Oxygen runs out fast. Respect depth.
- Not reading NOA's dialogue. She tells you exactly where to go next.
