GTA 6 Police & Wanted System : How It's Expected to Change From GTA V
Everything we know about GTA 6's police AI and wanted system. RDR2-style witness mechanics, improved cop behavior, and how the wanted level system might evolve.
- •Leaked footage suggests RDR2-style witness system : NPCs can report crimes, and you can silence witnesses
- •Cop AI is expected to be dramatically improved : more realistic pursuit, less 'teleporting police'
- •Modern Vice City setting means helicopters, drones, and surveillance cameras may play a role
⚠️ Pre-release guide: This article was compiled before the game release, based on official announcements and media reports. Details may change at launch — not based on hands-on testing.

The GTA V Wanted System, Why It Needs an Overhaul
GTA V's police system, while iconic, had flaws cops would materialize out of thin air in remote areas. Helicopters spawned instantly. Escaping a 5-star wanted level felt more like exploiting game mechanics than clever evasion.
GTA 6, built on the RDR2 engine iteration, has the potential for a dramatically more realistic system.
RDR2's Witness System, Likely Coming to GTA 6
RDR2 introduced a witness mechanic: commit a crime, and nearby NPCs become witnesses who will run to report you. You can stop them, intimidate, bribe, or silence them. If they reach law enforcement, you get a wanted level.
Leaked 2022 GTA 6 footage showed NPC behavior consistent with this system. If it makes it into the final game, GTA 6's police interactions will feel far more organic than GTA V's "shoot one person → instant 1 star."
What Might Change With the Wanted System
| Feature | GTA V | GTA VI (Expected) | |---------|-------|-------------------| | Witnesses | ❌ No witness system | ✅ NPCs witness crimes and report them | | Police spawn | Instant, anywhere | Gradual response, realistic deployment | | Escape | Hide in alley for 30 seconds | Evade search perimeter. Police use patterns, not timers | | Helicopters | Spawn immediately at 3+ stars | Delayed, must deploy from nearest airbase | | Surveillance | ❌ None | Possible cameras, ANPR (license plate readers) in modern Vice City | | Non-lethal arrests | ❌ Kill on sight at high stars | Possible, police behavior based on crime severity | | Undercover units | ❌ None | Possible for drug/organized crime missions |
Modern Police Technology in Vice City
Set in 2026, GTA 6's Vice City has modern policing tools that the 2013 Los Santos didn't:
- Drones, Police surveillance drones are now widespread. Could be used to track you from above.
- Body cameras, NPC cops might wear body cams, meaning crimes are automatically reported.
- License plate readers, Stolen cars may be automatically flagged.
- Smartphone tracking, If your in-game phone is tracked, hiding becomes harder.
How It Affects Gameplay
If these systems make it into GTA 6, the gameplay loop changes significantly:
- Planning matters more. You'll need to scout locations, identify witnesses, and plan escape routes before committing crimes.
- Silencers become valuable. A silenced weapon might let you eliminate a witness without alerting others.
- Vehicle switching becomes strategic. Stolen vehicles may be tracked. You'll want your own "clean" cars.
- Safehouses matter. Having a place to lay low while heat dies down becomes more important.
What's Confirmed vs Speculation
| Confirmed | Speculation | |-----------|-----------| | RDR2 engine iteration used for GTA 6 | Witness system identical to RDR2 | | Improved NPC AI mentioned in official material | Drones, surveillance cameras | | Modern 2026 setting | License plate readers, body cams |
Rockstar hasn't officially detailed the wanted system. We'll know more closer to launch.
