1. Map Size & Density
GTA V's map was ~49 sq miles with roughly 150 enterable buildings. GTA VI doubles that landmass and quintuples the number of interiors, over 700 buildings you can walk into. The world isn't bigger; it's vastly denser. Every neighborhood in Vice City, every small town in Ambrosia, and every swamp shack in Grassrivers has meaningful interiors.
2. Two Protagonists Instead of Three
GTA V pioneered the triple-protagonist format. GTA VI scales back to two, but deepens the relationship. Jason and Lucia are a Bonnie & Clyde couple whose story is more intimate and personal than GTA V's sprawling ensemble cast.
3. First Female Protagonist in a Numbered GTA
Lucia Caminos is the series' first playable woman in a mainline title. She has her own combat style, weapon preferences, and backstory (grew up in Liberty City, served time in Leonida Penitentiary).
4. RDR2-Style Weapon Loadout
You can no longer carry 50 guns in your pocket. Choose your loadout before missions. Store weapons in lockers at safehouses and garages. Larger rifles require a sling on your back, a far more grounded and tactical system.
5. Vehicle Interior Customization (New)
For the first time, you can customize the inside of your cars, seats, dashboard, steering wheel. Combined with expanded exterior mods and off-road conversion kits, vehicle personalization reaches Forza Horizon levels of depth.
6. Fishing Is Finally in GTA
Rockstar brought fishing from RDR2 to GTA 6. Gambit Bay is a confirmed fishing spot. Different species, sizes, and challenges are expected.
7. Fencing Stolen Goods & Crime Economy
Deposit stolen goods at garages and sell to fences. This implies the return of burglary missions (last seen in GTA: San Andreas) and a deeper crime economy than GTA V's simple heist payouts.
8. 700+ Enterable Interiors
Clubs, malls, pawn shops, metro stations, fast food joints, apartments, the number of buildings you can enter is roughly 5× what GTA V offered.
9. In-Game Social Media
Your smartphone has a fully integrated social media system with viral videos, influencers (Real Dimez), and world events unfolding through your feed. A modern twist on GTA V's LifeInvader.
10. Chapter-Based Story Progression
GTA VI uses a chapter system like Red Dead Redemption 2. Items, bonuses, and activities unlock progressively, no instant pop-up unlocks. Progression is "threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story."
11. Gang Compound Raids
A new activity type: assault gang hideouts, eliminate hostiles, and escape with contraband. More structured than GTA V's random gang attacks.
12. Classic Car Restoration
Find abandoned classic cars across Leonida and restore them (a Forza Horizon barn find system in GTA). Exclusive to Ultimate Edition but may have base-game variants.
13. Dynamic Weather Effects Gameplay
Hurricanes, storms, and heatwaves aren't visual, they affect driving, NPC behavior, and mission conditions.
14. DualSense & 3D Audio (PS5)
PS5 version has haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D audio, a generation ahead of GTA V's PS3/360 roots.
15. No PC at Launch
GTA V launched on PC roughly 18 months after consoles. GTA VI follows the same pattern, console-first (PS5, Xbox Series X|S), PC coming 2027-2028.
The Bottom Line
GTA VI is building on GTA V's foundation with RDR2's depth. Smaller cast, deeper relationship story. Bigger map, dramatically denser world. More realistic weapons, deeper customization, actual side activities beyond golf and tennis. If GTA V was a playground, GTA VI is a simulation.
