AC Black Flag Resynced Naval Combat Advanced: Man O' War Counters, Elite Tactics & Legendary Ships
Advanced naval combat guide for Black Flag Resynced. How to counter every ship type, beat all 4 Legendary Ships, and master elite tactics the tutorial never teaches.
- •Chain shot to the sails stops a Man O' War dead. Then mortars, then broadsides. Any other order and you lose.
- •The Legendary Ships each have a gimmick. El Impoluto rams instantly if you face it. La Dama Negra's mortars are homing.
- •Brace is not optional. Enemy broadsides do 80% less damage when you brace. Most players forget this button exists.

This guide assumes you already know the basics (broadsides, mortars, boarding). If you do not, read the beginner ship combat guide first. This is for players who want to dominate Man O' Wars and clear the Legendary Ships.
Counter Matrix: Every Ship Type
| Ship Type | Weakness | Opening Move | Watch Out For | |-----------|----------|--------------|---------------| | Gunboat | Ram (1 hit kills) | Ram through the middle of a group | Swarms — they surround you while you focus on the big ship | | Schooner | Any weapon | Swivel gun their weak points (2 shots per point) | Fast turning radius, hard to broadside | | Brig | Chain shot | Chain + ram combo (stop them, then finish) | Their fire barrels do ridiculous damage for a small ship | | Frigate | Mortars | 3 mortar volleys before closing in | Accurate broadsides — brace when you see smoke | | Man O' War | Chain shot to sails first | See full strategy below | Ramming — their ram is an instant kill if your hull is below 50% | | Legendary | Varies by ship | See Legendary Ships section below | Each has a unique gimmick |
Man O' War Strategy: Step by Step
Man O' Wars have the highest hull, the biggest broadsides, and a ram that one-shots damaged ships. Do not treat them like bigger frigates. The approach is completely different.
Step 1: Approach from behind or the side — never head-on. Their front-mounted ram will end you.
Step 2: Chain shot to the sails. A stationary Man O' War cannot turn its broadsides toward you. This buys you 15-20 seconds of free damage.
Step 3: Mortar from range while it is immobilized. Aim for the center deck — mortars that land on the bow or stern do reduced damage.
Step 4: As it recovers speed, fire barrels behind it. The Man O' War turns slowly and will sail through your barrel field, taking 15-20% hull damage passively.
Step 5: Close in only after 3 mortar volleys have landed. Use heavy shot broadsides at close range. Brace on every enemy broadside volley — their cannons do 3x the damage of a frigate.
Step 6: Board at 20% or lower. Boarding a Man O' War at higher health is risky — the on-foot crew fight is the hardest boarding section in the game. Bring full medicine.
The Legendary Ships (4 Bosses)
These are completely optional but required for 100% completion. Each one drops 20,000 Reales. Do not attempt any of them without a fully upgraded Jackdaw.
El Impoluto (NW corner)
Gimmick: Insane ramming speed. It charges you the instant combat starts.
How to beat it: The moment the fight begins, turn hard left or right. Its ram will miss. Chain shot its sails immediately — it cannot ram if it cannot generate speed. Once slowed, it fights like a regular Man O' War. Never face it directly. Ever.
La Dama Negra (SW corner)
Gimmick: Homing mortars. Mortars that curve mid-flight to track your movement.
How to beat it: Normal mortar dodging (strafe left-right) does not work here. Instead, sail in a tight circle around La Dama Negra. The homing mortars cannot turn sharply enough at short range and will overshoot. Close the distance fast and use heavy shot broadsides.
HMS Prince (NE corner)
Gimmick: Twin Man O' War escort. You fight three ships at once.
How to beat it: Ignore the Prince. Sink the escort ships first — they are regular frigates. Since the Prince hangs back, use chain shot on both escorts, sink them with mortars, then focus the Prince alone. The Prince itself has no special gimmick — it is just a tanky Man O' War.
Royal Sovereign (SE corner)
Gimmick: Mortar barrage that fills half the screen. Heavy fog limits visibility to ~100 meters.
How to beat it: Use the fog as cover — the Sovereign loses track of you if you break line of sight. Sail away, circle back from a different angle, fire 2 broadside volleys, and disappear again before it can return fire. This is the slowest fight but the safest strategy.
Advanced Techniques the Tutorial Never Taught
The Swivel Gun Chain: Swivel gun weak points reset after 90 seconds. On long fights, rotate through all weak points — by the time you finish the last one, the first has reappeared.
Fire Barrel Trails: Drop fire barrels while sailing away from pursuing ships. The AI sails directly through them without dodging. This is free damage while you reposition.
The Brace Window: Enemy ships fire broadsides in 3 bursts with a 1-second gap. Brace during the first burst, release briefly, then brace again for the second and third. This conserves the brace stamina bar while still blocking most damage.
Ramming for Boarding: A ram that brings the enemy below 10% health will automatically trigger the boarding prompt even if you have not disabled the ship. This is the fastest way to capture schooners and brigs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should I always board or sometimes just sink? A: Board always. Boarding gives resources (wood, metal, cloth, rum, sugar), crew recruitment, and ship upgrade progress. Sinking gives you nothing. The only exception: if you are in a 3v1 fight and low on health, sometimes you need to sink one quickly to even the odds.
Q: What is the optimal broadside range? A: 80-120 meters. At this range, your broadsides deal full damage and you have time to react to enemy return fire. At 0-50 meters, you deal more damage but eat every enemy shot. At 150+ meters, damage drops off and mortars are more effective.
Q: Chain shot vs round shot vs heavy shot — when do I use each? A: Chain shot disables sails (immobilize). Round shot is your default anti-hull DPS. Heavy shot slows the enemy ship and deals bonus damage to weak points. Rotation: chain shot to stop them → heavy shot to slow and weaken → round shot to finish. Then board.
Q: How do I deal with multiple ships at once? A: Target the fastest ship first (brigs and schooners close distance faster than frigates). Use fire barrels as a barrier between you and the second ship. Mortar the second ship while broadsiding the first. If a ship boards you, you lose — prevent any ship from reaching ramming range.
