TL;DR — What You'll Learn
  • Ocelot pelts are the most important material early game. They craft the pistol holster upgrade. Farm them on the small islands north of Nassau.
  • Craft health upgrades first, then pistol holsters, then armor. Everything else is optional or cosmetic.
  • Humpback whale skin is needed for the final health upgrade. Harpoon them near the northeast corner of the map.

Black Flag crafting guide

Edward has four upgrade categories: Health, Pistol Holsters, Armor, and Ammo Capacity. The crafting system uses animal pelts, bones, and skins obtained through hunting and harpooning. Here is every recipe, every material location, and the upgrade priority you should follow.

Upgrade Priority: What to Craft First

| Order | Upgrade | Materials Needed | Effect | |:-----:|---------|------------------|--------| | 1 | Health I | 2 Green Turtle Shells | +1 health bar segment | | 2 | Pistol Holster I | 1 Ocelot Pelt, 1 Leather | Carry 2 pistols instead of 1 | | 3 | Health II | 4 Boar Pelts, 3 Ocelot Pelts | +2 health segments | | 4 | Pistol Holster II | 2 Jaguar Pelts, 2 Leather | Carry 3 pistols | | 5 | Armor I | 2 Ocelot Pelts, 1 Leather | Take 20% less melee damage | | 6 | Health III | 1 Humpback Whale Skin, 3 Jaguar Pelts | +3 health segments (max) | | 7 | Pistol Holster III | 2 Humpback Whale Skins, 3 Jaguar Pelts | Carry 4 pistols (max) | | 8 | Armor II | 2 Jaguar Pelts, 2 Leather, 1 Whale Skin | Take 40% less melee damage | | 9 | Ammo Pouch I–III | Various (see below) | More bullets and darts |

Ammo upgrades are luxuries. Craft them last. You can buy ammo from any general store for pocket change.

Where to Farm Every Material

Ocelot Pelt (Most Important Early Game)

Ocelots spawn on small, tropical islands. The best farming route:

  1. Fast travel to Nassau.
  2. Sail to the small islands directly north of Nassau (called the "Salt Key Bank" on your map).
  3. Each island has 2-3 ocelots. They respawn after fast traveling away and back.
  4. One loop nets 4-6 pelts. Three loops = enough for Health II and Pistol Holster II.

Jaguar Pelt

Jaguars spawn in the jungle interiors of larger islands. Best location: the south side of Cuba (near Havana). Each jaguar drops 1 pelt. Use Eagle Vision to spot them in tall grass; they are camouflaged and will ambush you if you are not paying attention.

Boar Pelt

Boars are everywhere. The forest areas around Great Inagua (your hideout island) have 4-5 boars at all times. Hunt them during the tutorial mission (you go there for the first time in Sequence 4) and grab enough for Health II immediately.

Green Turtle Shell

Green turtles spawn on beaches. The easiest farm: the beach on the east side of Great Inagua. Walk the shoreline with Eagle Vision; turtles glow yellow. There are always 3-4 turtles there.

Humpback Whale Skin (Rarest Material)

Obtained through the harpoon mini-game, not hunting. Whales appear as a white whale icon on your map when you are near them. The best location is the northeast corner of the Caribbean map, about halfway between the fast travel points of Cabo de Cruz and the eastern edge. Each whale gives 2 skins if you kill it without missing any harpoon shots.

Harpoon tip: Aim for the glowing weak spots (highlighted in yellow during the mini-game). Hitting these does double damage and gives a better chance of a clean kill with bonus skins.

Money vs. Materials: What to Buy, What to Farm

| Item | Farm or Buy? | Reason | |------|:-----------:|--------| | Leather | Buy (150R each) | Sold everywhere. Farming crocodiles takes too long. | | Ocelot Pelt | Farm | Cannot be bought. Must hunt. | | Jaguar Pelt | Farm | Cannot be bought. Must hunt. | | Boar Pelt | Farm | Cannot be bought. Must hunt. | | Whale Skin | Farm (harpoon) | Cannot be bought. Must harpoon. | | Turtle Shell | Farm | Cannot be bought. But only need 2 total for Health I. | | Ammo | Buy | Dirt cheap at general stores. |

Crafting Checklist (Speedrun Route)

If you want to minimize hunting time and get fully upgraded as fast as possible:

  1. Sequence 4 (first visit to Great Inagua): Hunt 4 boars, 2 turtles on the island. Craft Health I.
  2. Sequence 5 (Nassau area): Sail to Salt Key Bank. Hunt ocelots until you have 5 pelts. Craft Pistol Holster I and Health II.
  3. Sequence 7 (Havana area): Hunt jaguars in the Cuban jungle. Get 5 pelts. Craft Pistol Holster II and Armor I.
  4. Sequence 9 (northeast map unlocked): Harpoon 3 humpback whales. Craft Health III, Pistol Holster III, and Armor II.

Total gameplay time for full upgrades: about 2 hours if you combine hunting with mission travel. Do not dedicate a single session to pure farming; hunt while en route to missions and it barely feels like grinding.
